Russian FM: West trying to involve Interpol into its political game

Russia believes that the West is trying to involve Interpol in its political game – as stated by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, speaking about the statement of Interpol Secretary General Jurgen Stock about his readiness to support the Russian investigation organised after the terrorist attack in the Crocus City Hall near Moscow, RIA Novosti reports

Earlier, Jurgen Stock strongly condemned the terrorist attack in the Moscow Region and said that his organisation was ready to support the investigation conducted by the Russian authorities.

“This means that the Secretary General of Interpol, as the head of this structure, on behalf of the entire global police community, confirmed the inviolability of the fundamental principles of the organisation envisaged by its charter, which Article 2 calls for ensuring and developing the widest possible police co-operation. In this sense, the co-ordination of information exchange on the detection and investigation of crimes is a key task of Interpol. Therefore, it would be strange not to receive such a statement from the organisation. At the same time, we would like to understand how Jurgen Stock's words correlate with the controversial and obviously damaging decision of the organisation's executive committee as of 2022 on the introduction of restrictive data exchange measures against the Russian Federation," Ms. Zakharova said.

The Russian Foreign Ministry’s representative added that Moscow certainly appreciates ‘Jurgen Stock’s words that the organisation is ready to support the investigation by exchanging information’, but ‘Interpol needs to do something with its statement made in 2022’ in this case.

"These measures once again confirm that Interpol is persistently being drawn by the West into a political game, the main purpose of which is to disconnect the Russian Federation from Interpol's information resources and to further exclude it from the organisation," Ms. Zakharova concluded.

As it is known, in the evening of March 22nd, before the concert, shooting and fire occurred in the Crocus City Hall in Krasnogorsk, near Moscow. According to witnesses, several men burst into the hall and began shooting people at point-blank range, throwing incendiary bombs. Then the attackers set fires in several places, which led to the collapse of the roof. The auditorium was also completely burned out.

The perpetrators were detained in the early morning of March 23rd in the Bryansk Region. They turned out to be citizens of Tajikistan. The men were heading by car towards the border with Ukraine. The Basmanny Court of Moscow placed them under arrest until May 22nd.

According to the latest data, 143 people were killed.
