Expert: Belarusian People’s Congress to become major political event in April 2024

In April 2024, the first meeting of the seventh Belarusian People’s Congress will be held in Belarus, already in an updated capacity, with expanded powers. The speech of the President of Belarus, Aleksandr Lukashenko, will become the most serious political event – as stated by a deputy of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus, the Director General of the National Library, Vadim Gigin, in his talk with Alfa Radio.

The expert emphasised that not only Belarusian mass media, but also foreign ones would pay attention to the Belarusian People’s Congress.

“The Head of State is preparing a speech that will answer all the key questions, and everyone is waiting for this. I think this will be one of the most serious political events in April,” Vadim Gigin noted.

The expert added that he has no illusions about the hard work ahead.

“It is necessary to approve the rules of procedure, determine personnel issues – the Presidium and the Chairman. We will look at and discuss the work of the Constitutional and Supreme Courts. The next point is the composition of the Central Election Commission. We must remember that we have a presidential campaign ahead of us. We would like to listen to the report, and learn about the vision of its Chairman Igor Karpenko. We will determine the composition of the highest bodies that are of serious importance in our country's political system and society as a whole,” the parliamentarian stressed.

“The National Security Concept and the Military Doctrine – which are actually the key documents of paramount importance – will be definitely discussed at the Belarusian People’s Congress. They are directly related to the so-called Oshmyany Declaration [important statements made by the President during his working trip to the Oshmyany District of the Grodno Region on March 26th, 2024] and will outline Belarus’ response to the challenges and threats that the country faces,” Vadim Gigin noted.

“Another important point is the task for the economy for the five-year period. It is necessary to determine the main provisions and parameters of the socio-economic development of Belarus for the next five years. In short, an extremely rich agenda is scheduled,” Vadim Gigin added.
