Apple orchard planted by Belarus’ President during nationwide subbotnik to be taken care of by schoolchildren

President of Belarus Aleksandr Lukashenko told reporters that the apple orchard planted by him during the nationwide subbotnik will be put under the wing of local schoolchildren, BelTA reports

The Belarusian leader planted an apple orchard in his small homeland as part of the nationwide subbotnik.

“We’re doing this so that we can give it to schoolchildren, encouraging them to look after it and enjoy the results of their work. As I said, every school should have its own garden plot, enabling youngsters to dig the soil and walk on the ground, touching it with hands. This will help blow away all stupid thoughts from their minds. These schoolchildren will work here,” the Head of State said.

Aleksandr Lukashenko explained that previously there were peasant plots on the area under the planted garden. But now village houses are used mainly in summer, while their present owners and heirs use only a small part of the land for vegetable gardens.

“It was a wasteland. We developed it and decided to plant separate varieties of apple trees,” the President said.

In total, the orchard consists of 411 apple trees. Before the today’s cleanup event, 186 of them have already been planted (93 of Belorusskoe Sladkoe variety and 93 of Syabryna variety). With the Head of State’s participation, the remaining 225 trees of five apple varieties have been planted today. Most of them represent the above-mentioned varieties, while the others comprise 25 apple trees of the Kovalenkovskoye, Konfetnoe, and Red Free varieties.
