The discovery was reported by the New Era newspaper with reference to data from Galp Energia, which conducts hydrocarbon exploration in the area of the Orange River bordering South Africa together with local firms Custos Energy and National Petroleum Corporation of Namibia.

According to the source, oil samples taken from test wells showed low viscosity and low sulphur content.

At the moment, the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries is considering Namibia's application for membership. Experts report that, in the near future, this country may take the fourth place in Africa in terms of oil production.
